Apathy

The chill is gone, the burn is past
Emotions just aren’t built to last
Calloused heart and mind now take
The edge off the eternal ache

And out the window all is gray
Early nights blend into day
This fog of languor, like a quilt
Wraps me against the sting of guilt

The cushion of indifference
Mutes the rage of ambivalence
In the war of flesh and soul
Peace is the devil’s goal

And so I wear the softened chain
That guards me from all fear, or pain,
Or zeal, or strength, or joy, or love,
Or any thoughts that rise above

Oh Savior! Come and rescue me
From this, my selfish apathy
Restore your fire, purge the dross
That clouds my vision of Your cross

Awake the heart of flesh You gave
Dissolve the heart of stone
Teach me to feel Your power to save
And tremble at Your throne.

Purify my heart;
cleanse me from within and make me holy.
Purify my heart;
cleanse me from my sin, deep within.

Refiner's fire,
My heart's one desire
is to be holy,
set apart for You Lord,
I choose to be holy,
set apart for You, my Master,
ready to do Your will.
